Import 8: When submitting a grant to the NIH, they require that the PMC number be included for all references. How do I do this?

Answer: The NIH has revised their policy for submissions to require the PubMed Central reference number be included in documents submitted to the NIH.

The content files provided here place the PMC number in the User Defined 5 field for the Journal Articles. Updated Reference Manager content files are included here.

Unzip the attached files and place the files in the appropriate location as noted below.

Copy the Pubmed.cap file to:

  • Single User Version:

    C:\Program Files\Reference Manager (version)\Import

  • Network Version:

    C:\Program Files\Reference Manager (version) Network\Program\Import

Copy the NIH Grant Style file to:

  • Single User Version:

    C:\Program Files\Reference Manager (version)\Styles

  • Network Version:

    C:\Program Files\Reference Manager (version) Network\Program\Styles

Note you will also need to "Include" the "User Defined 5" field if it has been changed from the default.
  1. Close all open Reference Manager databases.
  2. Go to the File Menu and choose Open database.
  3. If you have an option here for "Access rights" change this to "Read-Write Exclusive."
  4. Go to the Tools menu and choose "Field and Type Edit."
  5. Under "Field Label Edit" scroll to the bottom where you see "User Defined 5." Select this field.
  6. Make sure the "I" column is checked.
  7. Click the button that says "Update Field For All Types."
  8. Click Yes.
  9. Click OK.
