Searching 7: When I try to search PubMed or the Web of Science in Reference Manager I get "No Matching References Found" when I know it should return some results or I get a time-out error message after two minutes. My computer uses a proxy server. How can I fix this?

Answer:

Note: If you have Reference Manager version 10.0 or 11.0, you should first run the update patch to 10.0.1 or 11.0.1. To update, go to Help > Updates. Use the wizard to update your installation. Otherwise, you can obtain the patch using the appropriate link:

Reference Manager 10
Reference Manager 11

Reference Manager 10.0.1,11.0.1 and 12 use the proxy settings in the Windows Internet Options for HTTP-based connections such as PubMed or the Web of Science, so make sure these are set correctly to recognize your proxy server:

  1. Open the “Internet Options” applet on the Windows Control Panel (or select Tools / Internet Options in Internet Explorer).
  2. Select the Connections tab and click the LAN Settings button.
  3. Make sure that the “Use a proxy server…” box is checked and that the address and port number of the proxy server are entered correctly.
  4. If the problems persist, click on the “Advanced…” button in the LAN Settings dialog. Under “Do not use proxy server for addresses beginning with:” type the URL of the site you are trying to search (either PubMed or Web of Science). Click OK and try the search again.

Reference Manager 9.0 or 9.5 users will need to upgrade their installation in order to connect to PubMed. Follow this link.
